Horticultural Help in NYC, has
participated in a special program that has introduced living plants in the seven
public schools that were temporarily evacuated following the World Trade
Center attack on September 11, 2001. By the end of February 2002, all of the schools
had re-opened; most for the first time since September. All are
within four blocks of Ground Zero
Knowing the beneficial effects that live plants have on air quality,
Florida nursery growers generously donated several thousand plants to
these schools to help clean the air. In an industry-wide effort, many
interior landscaping companies and horticultural suppliers made monetary
and in-kind contributions to this program. The plants have provided an enormous
psychological lift to the students and teachers. In some instances, the
plants are also used to screen the view of Ground Zero from the classroom
windows.
Will Creed, of Horticultural Help, helped coordinate this program and was
responsible for appropriate plant placement and instructional assistance for students and staff to ensure
that the plants continue to thrive in the schools.
